2021 NFL season: Notable injuries, news from Sunday's Week 5 games

Injuries and news we're monitoring around the NFL on this Week 5 Sunday:

  • Kansas City Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire was ruled out of Sunday night's game in the third quarter with a knee injury. Edwards-Helaire was carried off the field by teammates, but was seen walking on his own power into the X-ray room. Following Sunday night's game, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said offensive lineman Joe Thuney suffered a fractured hand, wide receiver Tyreek Hill had an unspecified knee injury and Travis Kelce had a stinger after a hard hit late in the game.
  • Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was taken to the hospital after the game with a possible throat contusion. Linebacker Jordan Evans (knee) suffered a season-ending torn ACL in the game, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported.
  • New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley was ruled out against the Cowboys after suffering an ankle injury in the first half. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports Barkley suffered a low-ankle sprain, per a source, and the Giants RB is best characterized as week-to-week. Quarterback Daniel Jones was carted off after a helmet-to-helmet hit late in the second quarter. Jones was ruled out with a concussion at the start of the third quarter. Receiver Kenny Golladay (knee) and cornerback Rodarius Williams (knee) were also ruled out. Rookie wideout Kadarius Toney was disqualified from the game after throwing a punch at Cowboys safety Damontae Kazee in the fourth quarter. Toney was the leading Giants receiver at the time of his ejection with 10 catches for 189 yards.
  • Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward and safety M.J. Stewart (hamstring) were ruled out against the Chargers after suffering a neck injury. Ward was initially questionable to return. Offensive lineman Jack Conklin (knee) did not return after getting hurt in the fourth quarter. All three, along with CB Greedy Williams (shoulder), will undergo MRIs on Monday, per coach Kevin Stefanski. Rookie linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah suffered a throat contusion and was taken to a local hospital near SoFi Stadium after the game, the team announced.
  • Chicago Bears right tackle Germain Ifedi and linebacker Caleb Johnson (knee) were ruled out early in the third quarter against the Raiders. Linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu (pectoral) was also ruled out.
  • Arizona Cardinals tight end Maxx Williams suffered a lower right leg injury in the second quarter and was carted off. Center Rodney Hudson (ribs) and linebacker Zeke Turner (shoulder) did not return after sustaining injuries in the second half.
  • Los Angeles Chargers guard Oday Aboushi (knee) is feared to have sustained a torn ACL during Sunday's game against the Browns based on an initial exam, per Rapoport. He'll have further tests Monday to confirm, Rapoport added.
  • New Orleans Saints quarterback Taysom Hill was ruled out against Washington with a concussion. He was carted off the field after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit from cornerback William Jackson. Wide receiver Deonte Harty (hamstring) was also ruled out.
  • Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster exited early against the Broncos with a shoulder injury. Linebacker Devin Bush suffered a leg injury and did not return.
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David was ruled out against the Dolphins with an ankle injury. Bucs coach Bruce Arians said after the game he thinks it's a high-ankle sprain.
  • Houston Texans offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil exited early against the Patriots with a hand injury.
  • Washington Football Team offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi was ruled out against the Saints with an ankle injury. Wide receiver Curtis Samuel (groin) and cornerback Darryl Roberts (quad) were also ruled out.
  • Tennessee Titans linebacker Rashaan Evans (quad), guard Rodger Saffold (shoulder) and linebacker Monty Rice (groin) exited early against the Jaguars. Cornerback Kristian Fulton (hamstring) was ruled out.
  • Detroit Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus suffered a shoulder injury against the Vikings and did not return. Cornerback Corey Ballentine (hamstring) also exited early.
  • Miami Dolphins tight end Adam Shaheen (knee) exited early against the Buccaneers.
  • Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Myles Jack (back) and linebacker Dakota Allen (shoulder) exited early against the Titans. Center Brandon Linder was carted off the field with a knee injury and ruled out.
  • Green Bay Packers cornerback Kevin King (shoulder) exited early against the Bengals.
  • New England Patriots running back Damien Harris (ribs) exited early against the Texans.
  • Denver Broncos defensive back Mike Ford (knee) was ruled out against the Steelers.
  • Indianapolis Colts defensive end Isaac Rochell (illness) has been ruled out ahead of Monday's game against the Ravens.
