2025 NFL Draft

Abdul Carter won't have surgery for stress reaction in right foot; Penn State edge to work out at pro day

Potential No. 1 overall pick Abdul Carter avoided a significant injury scare ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft.

After tests at the NFL Scouting Combine revealed a stress reaction in his right foot, Carter consulted with doctors on Thursday morning. It was determined that the pass rusher would not undergo surgery, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per sources informed of the situation.

Carter reported no pain for the small stress reaction and is expected to work out at his pro day on March 28, Rapoport added.

After doctors initially identified the issue, surgery was on the table for the Penn State product, with an eight-week timetable after a screw would have been inserted.

Avoiding going under the knife is excellent news for the draft's top edge prospect. Carter could hear his name called first on April 24 in Green Bay and likely wouldn't have fallen out of the top 5 regardless of the stress reaction.
