Bears' Henry Melton (concussion) on pace for Week 1

Henry Melton, one of the most intriguing defensive tackles entering the season, looks to be on pace to be available for the Chicago Bears' season opener, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Pro Bowl defensive tackle began exercising Monday as he returns from a concussion he suffered in the Bears' preseason opener.

On the other side of the ball, wide receiver Earl Bennett still is in the process of being cleared after suffering a concussion early in August.

"Henry is into running," coach BearsMarc Trestman said Monday. "Earl is day to day. I know he was with some of the medical people this morning, I haven't checked. Henry ran today. He's going to run tomorrow and Wednesday and pick up that running significantly."

Melton is a game-changer on the Bears' defensive front, and getting him back from the get-go is a huge boon for that side of the ball. Bennett came into the season with big expectations, but the Bears have more depth at the receiving positions -- who would have said that in the last several years? -- with Alshon Jeffery steadily improving and Martellus Bennett at tight end. Earl Bennett's absence can be cushioned until he is 100 percent.
