Days into his third go-round with Gang Green, the veteran wide receiver talked about the burden Mark Sanchez faces in holding off rookie Geno Smith.
"It's going to be a battle," Edwards said Friday. "Mark can't make mistakes like he has in the past. Things have to be legit with Mark for him to be the starter because he has a legit guy knocking at the back door."
Edwards, who has spent mere days with Smith, told reporters the rookie reminds him of the young passer he spent last summer with, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.
"Russell was a maniac when it came to studying film, breaking down film and asking questions," Edwards said. "Russell was a beast at that. That's what I see potentially in Geno, how he comes in the huddle, how he asks questions in meetings. He's right there with Mark."
Making it tough for both Sanchez and Smith is an offensive roster that might be the NFL's weakest east of the Oakland Raiders.
With Santonio Holmes acknowledging he's unsure if he'll play in 2013 because of his injured foot, you can't find a bona fide weapon on the Jets. Tough running back Chris Ivoryhas the chance to make noise, but Edwards no longer is a pass-catcher who scares defenses. Neither is a fragile Kellen Winslow.
The lack of firepower means we're likely to see both quarterbacks this season, one way or another.
