There's a new workhorse in the Los Angeles Chargers' RB stable.
The Chargers are expected to sign former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris to a one-year deal worth up to $9.25 million, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport, Mike Garafolo and Tom Pelissero reported Monday. Harris' contract includes a $5.25 million base ($1.5 million fully guaranteed salary, $3.75 million signing bonus) and up to $4 million in rushing yard incentives, Pelissero added Tuesday.
With last year's leading rusher J.K. Dobbins an impending free agent and Gus Edwards released, the Chargers are bringing in a new lead back who's churned out four straight 1,000-yard seasons to begin his career.
A Pro Bowler as a rookie in 2021, the Pittsburgh first-round pick has been one of the most durable backs in the game. He's started 68 straight games since entering the league, standing as the only running back in the NFL to start more than 61 games since 2021 and having tallied a league-high 1,277 touches in that same span.
Despite the overall stats, Harris' time with Pittsburgh didn't go swimmingly throughout, as he averaged just 3.9 yards per carry and there were often calls to have running mate Jaylen Warren take on more touches. Still, for Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman's system and head coach Jim Harbaugh's approach, he portends to be a stellar fit.
Harris has produced 4,312 rushing yards and also had a career-high 74 receptions as a rookie, though his usage in the passing game has waned over the autumns.
The Chargers have a new bell cow back and Harris has a fresh start in which he's sure to get plenty of opportunity with the ball in 2025.
