Injuries: Ertz medically cleared to return to Eagles

Carson Wentz might be coming back from the bye with reinforcements.

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz told reporters Monday he has been medically cleared to return to the team after suffering a displaced rib in their Week 1 victory over the Cleveland Browns. Ertz had six catches for 58 yards in that contest, which he made it through even after suffering the injury.

Ertz has improved upon his numbers each year since entering the NFL in 2013. Ertz passed Brent Celek on the depth chart heading into the season and was a clear favorite of his rookie quarterback in their opener.

In other Eagles injury news, Leodis McKelvin told reporters it looks like he'll play Week 5 against the Lions. Like Ertz, the cornerback has also been out of action since leaving the win over the Browns with a hamstring injury.

Here are some other injuries we are tracking Monday:

  1. There was no update regarding the status of Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who left Sunday's loss to the Falcons to be evaluated for a concussion, coach Ron Rivera said. Rivera said linebacker Thomas Davis (hamstring) told him he would be fine, though Rivera hadn't talked to the trainers about him yet.
  1. Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon tore his Achilles tendon and is out for the season, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, according to a person who has spoken with the player.
  1. Patriots linebacker Rob Ninkovich is returning from a four-game suspension, but also a triceps injury. Rapoport reported he's healthy enough to play and could be in the lineup against the Browns on Sunday.
  1. Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer (concussion) wasn't out at the portion of Cardinals practice that is open to the media, NFL Network's Omar Ruiz reported. Drew Stanton would start Thursday against the 49ers if Palmer can't go and the team signed quarterback Zac Dysert off their practice squad Monday. Cardinals coach Bruce Arians painted a slightly more optimistic picture on Palmer when talking to reporters Monday, saying Palmer doesn't need practice reps to be able to play.
  1. Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian is day-to-day with a sprained shoulder, coach Gary Kubiak said. Siemian left Sunday's win over the Bucs and was relieved by rookie Paxton Lynch. He won't need much to return in time for Sunday's game against the Falcons.

"Trevor is our starting quarterback," Kubiak said, according to the Denver Post. "Hopefully he's going to be OK ... We feel fortunate with Trevor. We'll be day-to-day here."

  1. In other quarterback news, Bears signal-caller Jay Cutler is day-to-day as he recovers from a sprained thumb, coach John Fox said. Chicago got their first win Sunday against the Lions with Brian Hoyer at the helm.
  1. Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis has a mild hamstring strain, coach Todd Bowles said. It is too early to tell on his availability for Sunday, Bowles added.
  1. The 49ers confirmed that star linebacker NaVorro Bowman suffered a season-ending Achilles injury and was placed on injured reserve.
  1. Raiders tight end Lee Smith suffered a fractured bone in his lower leg in Oakland's win in Baltimore, Rapoport reported, per a source. It threatens the sixth-year player's season.
  1. Browns center Austin Reiter suffered a torn ACL in the loss to Washington, coach Hue Jackson said. He is headed to injured reserve after making his first start. Rookie defensive end Carl Nassib (broken hand) is set to return to practice this week, Jackson added, while quarterback Josh McCown and center Cameron Ervingare almost certain to miss the Week 5 game against New England.
  1. Giants cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie expects to play a limited role against the Vikings on Monday night, Rapoport reported. He won't start but is expected to play, per a source.
  1. Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan hyper-extended his elbow and is day-to-day, according to coach Jay Gruden.
  1. Cardinals defensive tackle Frostee Rocker is back at practice for the first time since suffering an MCL injury in Arizona's Week 1 loss against the Patriots.
  1. Packers tight end Jared Cook won't play Sunday as he continues to recover from a sprained right ankle.
  1. Texans tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz suffered an MCL sprain on Sunday that could cause him to miss some time, Rapoport reported.
  1. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters Monday that running back Thomas Rawls is likely out 1-3 more weeks with a cracked fibula. Carroll also added that linebacker Mike Morgan will have sports hernia surgery on Tuesday, and the team placed him on injured reserve.
  1. Vikings offensive tackle Andre Smith suffered an elbow injury in the first quarter of Monday's game against the Giants and did not return.
  1. The Giants announced that tight end Larry Donnell did not return to the game after suffering a concussion from a hard hit by Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr.
