The Jacksonville Jaguars placed quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who suffered a concussion in a Week 13 loss to the Houston Texans, on injured reserve Wednesday and he is expected to undergo surgery to repair an AC joint injury in his left shoulder in the coming weeks, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.
Lawrence missed a pair of games in November due to the shoulder injury before returning and sustaining a concussion.
Lawrence sustained the head injury while scrambling in the first half of Sunday's game, rolling left and attempting to slide when Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair launched into Lawrence with an extended forearm, illegally hitting the quarterback in the head. Lawrence immediately went into the fencing position, a symptom of a concussion, and later exited the field on a golf cart.
Al-Shaair was quickly penalized and ejected from the game, but only after multiple Jaguars came to Lawrence's defense, sparking an on-field fracas that also saw Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jonesejected.
Al-Shaair has since been suspended three games by the NFL for the hit, which NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan described as "unacceptable and a serious violation of the playing rules."
Lawrence's 2024 season is now finished.
Lawrence completed 60.6% of his passes for 2,045 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 10 games played in a season riddled with injuries.
Former first-round pick Mac Jones replaced Lawrence on Sunday, completing 20 of 32 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns in the losing effort, and should be expected to handle starting duties the rest of the way.
