Jay Ratliff put on Dallas Cowboys' reserve/PUP list

The Dallas Cowboysdecided to keep nose tackle Jay Ratliff this year despite injury concerns, a scheme change, a poor 2012 season, a driving while intoxicated arrest and a $5 million salary. That decision already has backfired.

The Cowboysannounced Tuesday that Ratliff was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, knocking him out for the first six weeks of the season. The team also put defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford and center Ryan Cook on injured reserve.

Ratliff showed up to training camp with a hamstring injury. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said just two weeks ago that he had "no concern" about Ratliff's availability for Week 1. Now he's not eligible to return until Week 7 at the earliest.

This is what happens when you keep players one year too long, which has happened so often in Jones' tenure. Players who have been paid handsomely aren't available like you expect. The Cowboys were confident that Ratliff fit their new 4-3 defensive scheme, but he hasn't been his former Pro Bowl self for a few years.

Cowboys fans don't like this news, but they will enjoy the NFC East preview from "The Around The League Podcast."
