Jermaine Johnson wants to be 'trump card' for Jets defense in return from Achilles injury

New York Jets pass rusher Jermaine Johnson II is healthy after missing most of 2024 with an Achilles tear. The fourth-year pro believes he'll be a difference-maker for the revamped Gang Green defense.

"I feel like I can definitely be a trump card for this defense and the team," Johnson said, via the New York Post. "I put a lot of pressure on myself, and so do the coaches and the guys. It's important to me that I deliver. I don't take that lightly."

After a 7.5-sack 2023 campaign and a Pro Bowl selection, Johnson tore his Achilles in Week 2, missing the rest of 2024. The 26-year-old returns as a bookend to Will McDonald IV in Steve Wilks' defense.

Achilles injuries are notoriously difficult to return from and generally take time for full explosion to return. However, if he can remain healthy, Johnson's ability to get upfield can completely change how the Jets affect the quarterback.

Johnson is looking forward to finally getting back on the field in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"I know it's going to be emotional for me just because it was a long, long road," Johnson said Wednesday. "I tend not to get distracted. This is bigger than myself. Every week is important. I've got to be what I've got to be to win, and that's what my brain's going to be focused on most. I'm sure I'll bask in it a little bit before the game, but when that clock starts, I'll be locked in."
