A 2009 fourth-round draft pick out of Texas A&M, McGee has completed 55.1 percent of his 49 attempts for 310 yards and an interception this preseason.
During halftime of Wednesday night's 30-13 win over the Miami Dolphins, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones discussed McGee's NFL future, which may involve a move to another team.
"I think we have seen some things out of McGee tonight (Wednesday) that are really encouraging," Jones said. "Actually, its vintage McGee. You'd like to see him be quicker with the ball, but you see him make some plays. Other teams of course have shown interest in Stephen McGee, so we know that somebody thinks he's a pretty good ball player. We do, too. It will really depend upon our fifty-third guy without McGee. Do we think we can live with him or do we think we need the third QB? So that will be something we go through tonight after the game and make the decision tomorrow."
Loosely translated, Jones is indicating that the Cowboys do not want to carry three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster at the start of the season and would gladly take a conditional late-round draft pick for a player who is not a part of the team's present or future.
What would McGee bring to another team? Well, in limited action (three games, one start) McGee has played turnover-free football and has an affordable price tag as he's scheduled to make the league minimum ($615,000) in the fourth and final season of his rookie contract.
A team that is low on the waiver wire priority order and is looking to add depth to the position, or thinks that McGee could be an upgrade over their No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback, could part with a future late-round draft pick to acquire him from Dallas.
