Justin Fields exited practice Thursday morning after suffering a dislocated toe in his right foot, the New York Jets announced.
Fields is considered day to day, avoiding a serious injury that would require him missing significant time, per the team.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport first reported that the quarterback dislocated a toe in his foot. Rapoport added that Fields did not suffer a fracture and that his big toe was not the one dislocated.
Fields was carted from practice early after pulling up lame following a play in which he rolled right and threw an incomplete pass to tight end Jeremy Ruckert, per reporters on the scene. The QB was down briefly before being helped off the field by a trainer. Fields spent time in the injury tent before being carted to the locker room.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters earlier Thursday that he believed Fields' toe was stepped on based on how the play unfolded.
The Jets inked Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract this offseason and immediately installed him as the starter. Tyrod Taylor remains in New York as a veteran backup. He took over with the first team on Thursday after Fields went down with an injury.
"The most important part is if anything does happen to Justin, I don't think there's any drop off as far as what we want to do with play-calling," Glenn said of Taylor. "Very similar when we talk about skill sets. That was enticing for us. And the leadership ability. The things that we've heard about him. I've played against him before. You can tell the players gravitate toward him. When he says something, everybody really listens, even the coaching staff. He's been around this league a long time. He knows what it takes to win, and he's a really good person. We're all excited to have that guy here."
Missing any significant time would be a detriment for Fields learning a new system under first-time offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, so Thursday's update is a sigh of relief for Gang Green.
The 26-year-old quarterback avoided injuries in his lone season last year in Pittsburgh, making six starts. However, issues pockmarked his first three seasons with the Chicago Bears, including groin, rib, shoulder, hip and thumb injuries.
