Los Angeles City Council gives preliminary approval for Olympic Flag Football at Stadium in Exposition Park

The Los Angeles City Council on Friday approved updates to the 2028 Games Plan, including preliminary approval of the Stadium in Exposition Park to be named as Flag Football's competition venue when Flag makes its 2028 Olympic Games debut in Los Angeles.

Just beyond L.A.'s iconic downtown skyline, and adjacent to Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the open-air Stadium in Exposition Park will be one of the main Olympic competition zones.

Following the inclusion of five new sports to the 2028 Olympic sport program, LA28 is optimizing the use of the Stadium in Exposition Park, for Flag Football and lacrosse.

This optimized use of the stadium brings more days of competition between the two sports, which will welcome more spectators for a longer duration of Games-time to one of the main competition zones in Los Angeles. Similar to previous editions of the Games, Football Preliminaries will take place in several stadiums outside of the host city, which will be announced at a later date.

"This venue plan sets the stage for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games to engage every part of our city like no Games in history," Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass said in a statement. "The changes approved by the City Council will improve the financial plan for the Games and help us ensure that LA28 will leave a lasting legacy and turn a profit for the people of Los Angeles -- as did our 1932 and 1984 Games. I applaud the City Council for their approval of this plan, and I thank the organizing committee for their continuing hard work to make sure the 2028 Games will make all of America proud as we welcome and inspire the world."

Additional updates to the 2028 Games Plan that do not relocate events outside the City of Los Angeles' boundaries, or that assign venues for the remaining new sports added to the Olympic and Paralympic sport programs since 2017, along with the updated Paralympic venue plan will all be announced at a later date.
