Matt Schaub sits as Houston Texans backups split reps

Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak has yet to decide on his Week 7 starting quarterback, though it's looking more and more like Matt Schaub won't be an option.

T.J. Yates and Case Keenum split reps with the first team in Wednesday's practice. A favorite has yet to emerge.

"I believe in both of them," coach Gary Kubiak said, via the Houston Chronice. "They both understand our offense."

Schaub's ankle is still "swollen" and "very sore." Kubiak isn't prepared to rule him out just yet, but the choice is likely to come down to Yates versus Keenum -- much to Gil Brandt's dismay.

Here are the rest of the injury updates from around the league:

  1. Schaub's injury wasn't the most costly for the Texans. Safety Danieal Manning was placed on season-ending injured reserve with a fractured fibula. Shiloh Keo will start opposite Ed Reed for a Houston unit that ranks No. 1 in total defense.
  1. Bills coach Doug Marrone said it will be another four to six weeks before EJ Manuel (knee) takes the field again. Thad Lewis is expected to start Sunday's game against the Dolphins after practicing on his mildly sprained foot Wednesday.
  1. In other Bills news, C.J. Spiller acknowledged the obvious: His sprained ankle "definitely" wasn't 100 percent last week. "I still feel like I'm not exploding," Spiller explained. He will have to play through pain, as Buffalo's bye doesn't come until Week 12.
  1. Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano confirmed Wednesday that Carl Nicks underwent surgery to clean out the MRSA infection in his toe. The Pro Bowl guard is out indefinitely.
  1. Michael Vick conceded Wednesday that his hamstring injury is worse than he thought it would be. Nick Foles' audition for the starting job might be extended another couple of weeks.
  1. Calvin Johnson practiced Wednesday, which can be taken as a sign that his knee is getting healthier.
  1. Santonio Holmes (hamstring) is not practicing for the Jets, which means his return to game action likely will have to wait at least another week.
  1. Packers wide receiver James Jones was unable to practice on his sprained PCL Wednesday. Coach Mike McCarthy is still holding out hope that Jones will be available versus the Brownson Sunday.
  1. Jaguars wide receiver Cecil Shorts is in a "a lot of pain" due to his clavicle injury, but is still hopeful of playing Sunday versus the Chargers.
  1. Rookie Joseph Randle is taking the first-team snaps at running back for the Cowboys in the wake of DeMarco Murray's MCL sprain.

  1. For the first time since injuring his knee and hip, Jake Locker graduated to light tossing and jogging during individual drills on Wednesday. He's still shooting for a return after the Titans' Week 8 bye.
  1. Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart (ankle) is eligible to be activated from the physically unable to perform list but isn't practicing this week. He acknowledged Tuesday that he would probably need a couple of weeks before he's ready for game action.
  1. Linebacker Bobby Wagner won't play for the Seahawks this week, but tight end Zach Miller will, coach Pete Carroll said.
  1. Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola (concussion, groin) did not practice Wednesday.
