The Kansas City Chiefs aren't finished adding bodies along their less-than-pristine offensive line.
The team on Wednesday announced the signing of veteran guard Mike McGlynn, who made 30 starts for the Indianapolis Colts over the past two seasons. In a related move, Kansas City waived offensive lineman Ben Gottschalk.
McGlynn will battle for playing time along a thin Chiefs front that lost tackle Branden Albert and guards Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz during the offseason. Kansas City also must patch over the absence of starting right tackle Donald Stephenson, who was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the regular season.
McGlynn isn't about to save the day. The 29-year-old blocker was released by the Redskins this week just months after signing with Washington in March. He previously spent time with the Eagles and Bengals and finished last year in Indy ranked as the No. 71 player at his position out of 75 guards, per Pro Football Focus. Only four of his peers earned a lower grade in pass coverage.
What little we've seen from Kansas City's line this preseason has us quite concerned for the life of quarterback Alex Smith. A return to the playoffs is highly unlikely.
