The Oakland Raiders will have at least one of their two high-profile rookies under contract when they open training camp Friday.
The Raiders signed second-round pick Obi Melifonwu on Wednesday, the team announced. Melifonwu's signing comes a day after Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said he expected the Raiders would soon sign the former Connecticut safety and first-round selection Gareon Conley.
Selected 56th overall by the Raiders in this year's draft, Melifonwu recorded 351 tackles, eight interceptions and 16 defended passes during his tenure with the Huskies.
Whether the Raiders sign Conley before the start of camp remains to be seen. A woman accused Conley of raping her at a downtown Cleveland hotel on April 9. The former Ohio State cornerback, who was drafted No. 24 overall by the Raiders this spring, has vehemently denied the accusation. He has not been charged or arrested and no warrant has been issued. The case remains "under investigation" by Cleveland police, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported this week.
Conley met with Cleveland police in early May and told NFL Network's Steve Wyche at Raiders rookie minicamp "I don't know where things stand, but I know the [May 1] meeting with [Cleveland police] went well."
