What's changing?
The Jets have rebooted the machine. Rex Ryan was fired following his fourth consecutive non-playoff season. General manager John Idzik was sacked after two seasons, several head-scratching decisions and the most disastrous press conference in recorded history. Enter Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan, two local guys who hope to jump-start an organization that has stagnated. Don't be surprised if the Jets flirt with the idea of a reboot at quarterback as well -- Geno Smith will remain in the mix, but the draft could be used to bring in a new option behind center.
Biggest free agents
» LB David Harris: Harris, 30, won't command anything close to the $9 million annual salary he got in his last deal with the Jets, but he remained one of the team's best defensive players in 2014.
» NT Damon Harrison: "Snacks" has been the team's best bargain the past two seasons. The run-stuffer is in line for a big raise and he should get it. If Harrison is allowed to walk, the Jets become an intriguing potential player for Ndamukong Suh.
Other key free agents: QB Michael Vick, CB Kyle Wilson, G Willie Colon
On the way out?
» Percy Harvin: The toughest decision of the offseason. Harvin wasn't particularly productive in his eight-game audition after an October trade, but that can be attributed to factors that go beyond the player. Harvin is a brittle-but-gifted playmaker, and now the Jets must decide if they want to carry his hefty $10.5 million salary for 2015. Another important factor: A sixth-round pick becomes a fourth-rounder to the Seahawks if Harvin is on the roster after March 19. Does Maccagnan want to give up precious draft real estate for a high-priced veteran he inherited?
» Chris Johnson: Johnson proved definitively last season he's no longer the game-breaking back we remember in Tennessee. Johnson can still be useful in a committee role, but the Jets could find more productive ways to spend $3.5 million.
What they need
An edge pass rusher and quarterback are also on the wish list.
Offseason crystal ball
Maccagnan promised to be aggressive in free agency. He better be, unless he wants billboards popping up in Northern New Jersey calling for his head. Prediction: If the Pats can't lock up Revis, the Jets will bring the prodigal son home with a huge deal. Harvin will be cut loose, putting the Jets in the market for a new receiver. Expect Rex to overpay to steal Harris. Geno Smith will have competition in camp from a high-profile rookie.
