Randy Moss wasn't in attendance for the first two weeks of the San Francisco 49ers' offseason program, but he arrived Monday just in time for the first on-field coaching session.
Matt Maiocco of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area reports that coach Jim Harbaugh suggested Moss spend the first two weeks at home, so that's what he did. Moss joins a team that looks more difficult to make after the events of draft weekend.
Let's think about the 49ers' receiver depth chart. Michael Crabtree is locked in at one starting job. Mario Manningham will get a lot of snaps, and first-round draft pick A.J. Jenkins has a guaranteed spot on the team. That leaves Moss fighting with Ted Ginn Jr., Kyle Williams and Brett Swain for scraps.
Unlike Ginn, Williams and Swain, Moss doesn't offer any special-teams value. And he's coming off a year during which he didn't play any football.
"It was eye opening," Moss said Monday about his first practice. "Today was the first day and we were moving so fast. Today felt like we'd been out here for a week or two."
He will have to get up to speed fast. Barring injuries in front of him, Moss will have a difficult time just making the 49ers. He looks like an insurance policy at this stage, albeit one that attracts a lot of attention.
