The NFL placed Houston Texans safety Jimmie Ward on the Reserve/Commissioner Exempt List on Tuesday.
Ward was arrested in August on a felony warrant in Texas following a June arrest, also in Texas, for allegedly assaulting and threatening a woman.
Ward, 34, is prohibited from attending Texans practices and games while on the Commissioner Exempt List.
The Commissioner Exempt List is a special player status available to clubs only in "unusual circumstances," per the league's definition. The time on the list is undefined and determined by Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Ward, dealing with a foot injury, has not practiced with the team during training camp as he was played on the physically unable to perform list.
A 2014 NFL Draft first-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers, Ward spent nine seasons with the Niners and played the last two with the Texans.
He had 48 tackles and two interceptions during 10 games, all starts, with Houston last season.
