The Tennessee Titanshave a new head coach in Mike Mularkey -- and a new offensive coordinator, too.
Terry Robiskie has been hired as the team's new play-caller, the team announced Wednesday. In addition, the team announced Dick LeBeau as its assistant head coach/defensive coordinator. LeBeau worked as an associate head coach in 2015 under former Titans defensive coordinator Ray Horton, who was hired by the Browns in the same capacity Wednesday. Â
Robiskie spent the past eight seasons as the receivers coach for the Atlanta Falcons, turning Roddy White and Julio Jones into stars.
In an unusual move, former Titans coordinator Jason Michael will bump down a notch to replace John McNulty as quarterbacks coach, a move that was seen as "important" for franchise quarterback Marcus Mariota, per Rapoport. In addition, Bobby April has been named the team's new special teams coordinator. April held the same position with the New York Jets this past season.
The Titans appear allergic to headline-generating hires, but Robiskie brings a flood of coaching experience, having served as an NFL assistant since 1982. During his four decades in the league, the former pro running back has served as offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Raiders (from 1989 to 1993) and play-caller and interim head coach of the Browns in 2004.
It would have been fascinating to see the Titans chase after Patriots play-caller Josh McDaniels instead of Mularkey and his bland band of assistants, but Tennessee -- like the Buccaneers with Jameis Winston -- have made it a priority to keep Mariota's support staff in place, hoping to make his transition into Year 2 as smooth as possible.
Everyone from Mularkey on down will be judged upon how that pans out.
