Week 5 fantasy football notebook

» Momentum seemed to be swinging back to the Bengals after Andy Dalton found Mohamed Sanu for a touchdown. However, the Patriots rallied right back and Rob Gronkowski scored a touchdown to answer. Any shred of momentum disappeared for Cincinnati when they fumbled the ensuing kickoff and it was returned for a touchdown by the Patriots. - AG

» A.J. Green finally got a catch! But he quickly fumbled the football. ... doh! The Bengals are shooting themselves (and their fantasy owners) in the foot, as Jermaine Gresham also dropped a perfectly thrown pass from Andy Dalton that would have been a touchdown. The other Patriots scoring drives have ended in two Stephen Gostkowski field goals, leaving the score 20-3 at the half. - AG

» So, clearly Tom Brady and co. wanted to make a statement early on Sunday night. The Pats moved 80 yards down the field in a hurry on the opening drive, capping it off with a 1-yard touchdown plunge from Stevan Ridley. The Bengals moved the ball well, but came up empty on a missed field goal. Meanwhile, Brady hit Rob Gronkowski for a long gain, and then Tim Wright for touchdown strike. Are we seeing the beginnings of another tight end tandem in New England? - AG

» Peyton Manning had a huge day, finishing with 479 yards and four touchdown passes against the Cardinals. His monster performance was good enough for 30.96 fantasy points. Manning has yet to post less than 20.00 fantasy points in a game yet this season. Demaryius Thomas had 226 yards and two touchdowns while Emmanuel Sanders collected 101 yards on seven receptions. Julius Thomas also performed well with six receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns. They only blemish for the Broncos today was when running back Montee Ball left the game early with a groin injury which will be something to monitor this week. - MF

» There is now some reason for concern with Colin Kaepernick. The 49ers quarterback is struggling to read coverages, but also isn't finding a lot of room to run. His inconsistency is having a ripple effect on the production of his receivers, most notably Michael Crabtree. - MG

» At halftime in Devner, Demaryius Thomas had five receptions for 165 yards and two touchdowns. No that's not a typo. In his first three games, Thomas totaled 141 receiving yards and one score. It's pretty apparent that he's back in a big way.- MF

» Antonio Gates is at it again. He already has two touchdown receptions in the first half against the Jets and has five total this season. That's enough to rank the veteran second in touchdowns among tight ends to only Julius Thomas who scored his sixth of the season earlier today.- MF

» Chiefs' tight end Travis Kelce scored a touchdown for his third straight game in the first quarter against the 49ers on a short pass from Alex Smith. Kelce needs to be owned in all fantasy leagues as his role is only getting more prominent in Kansas City's passing game as the season goes on. - MF

» Peyton Manning has started filling another page in the record books, as he hit Julius Thomas for his 500th touchdown pass. Yeah, that's pretty good. Only Brett Favre has thrown for over 500 scores (508), but it took Peyton far less games to do it. - AG

» Remember Tavon Austin? - MG

» Houston versus Dallas was a tale of running backs when all was said and done. DeMarco Murray continued his ridiculous season, and for the fifth straight game rushed for over 100 yards. He took 31 carries for 136 yards and added six receptions for 56 yards. Murray also fumbled for the fourth time this season, but fantasy owners aren't complaining...If you started Arian Foster this morning, you might have been a bit concerned after he played last week but admittedly wasn't 100 percent, and it showed. But today was a different story. Foster finished with 23 carries for 157 yards and added two catches for 15 yards. Oh yea, and he scored two rushing touchdowns. His performance was good for 29.20 fantasy points. - MF

» In Carolina, the Bears hadn't scored a touchdown in the entire second half which gave the Panthers a chance to catch up. After Graham Gano. tied the game with a 44-yard field goal, Matt Forte. fumbled on Chicago's next possession. Cam Newton. then led Carolina on a 23-yard touchdown drive completing his second touchdown pass of the day to Greg Olsen to take the lead. The Panther's tight end leads his team with six receptions for 72 yards and two scores. - MF

» If you started Austin Davis, you would currently have the highest-scoring quarterback in fantasy. You would also be a wizard and should probably use your powers for more important things. Like curing Ebola. But it is a good reminder that the Eagles secondary is still quite friendly to opposing passing games. - MG

» It was also a quiet day in Jacksonville, as only one offensive touchdown was scored -- by Michael Palmer. Hey, at least Ben Roethlisberger threw it to him. Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown both had solid days with over 82 rushing yards and 84 receiving yards, respectively. - AG

» Arian Foster's strong day has continued, as he now has 127 rushing yards and two touchdowns. We're pretty sure he's feeling OK this week. - AG

» The points are coming in a hurry in Indy, as the Ravens responded with a quick touchdown drive capped by Justin Forsett's 11-yard touchdown scamper. - AG

» Andrew Luck has tacked on a rushing touchdown to his day, greatly boosting his fantasy point total in standard scoring leagues. - AG

» It's been a quiet day offensively in Indianapolis, but Andrew Luck did find Dwayne Allen for a touchdown. Meanwhile, the Ravens have done fantasy players no favors in their backfield. The division of labor is as follows: Justin Forsett five carries, Bernard Pierce four carries, Lorenzo Taliaferro five carries. Sheesh. - AG

» Dallas leads Houston after second half touchdown receptions by Terrance Williams and Dez Bryant in the second half. Bryant leads the Cowboys with 10 targets on the day and has hauled in six catches for 36 yards and the score. DeMarco Murray has also eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the fifth straight game this season. - MF

» Once upon a time, we thought Devonta Freeman was going to take over in the Falcons backfield. Can we get a do-over and make that Antone Smith instead? All the guy does is score long touchdowns. That part likely isn't sustainable, but the fact that he's getting touches and targets makes him a tantalizing option. - MG

» Louis Murphy Might have the catch of the day on his toe-tapping 20-yard touchdown catch. And that includes this insaneJulio Jones catch. Bad news for Jimmy Graham owners, as he has officially been ruled out for the rest of the game. Sigh. - AG

» Apparently, Arian Foster is healthy. He has 12 carries for 99 yards and scored a rushing touchdown early in the third quarter against the Cowboys. Foster looks quick and explosive thus far and producing for his fantasy owners. - MF

» The Panthers' offense finally produced some points late in the first half on a 9-yard touchdown grab by tight end Greg Olsen from Cam Newton. It was Olsen's second catch of the day as the Bears lead the Panthers 21-14 at halftime. Matt Forte has 120 yards from scrimmage and a receiving touchdown. - MF

» In Jacksonville, it took the Steelers almost an entire half to score a touchdown against the Jaguars. And the guy who scored is owned in 0.1 percent of NFL.com leagues. Tight end Michael Palmer caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger to put the Steelers up 10-3 with less than two minutes to play in the second quarter. #ThatHelpsNoOne - MF

» Chicago has scored three unanswered touchdowns as Cutler hooked up with Alshon Jeffery for a 25-yard reception for a score. Jeffery has now scored in two games in a row and has been reliable as ever so far this season for his fantasy owners. - MF

» Pierre Thomas or the "PT Bruiser" as Marcas Grant calls him, found the end zone first in New Orleans. He wiggled through the defense on a screen pass from Drew Brees. On a more worrisome note, Jimmy Graham was in the locker room being evaluated for an arm injury. We'll keep you posted once we hear more. - Alex Gelhar

» You can go ahead and panic on LeSean McCoy. The Eagles offensive line is awful and McCoy is facing multiple defenders in the backfield every time he gets the football. There is officially a problem with Philly's offense. - MG

» That whole Bears offense being exlposive thing has held up as running back Matt Forte scored his first touchdown of the season on a reception from Jay Cutler. It's surprising that it took this long, but Forte's owners can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Cutler followed up with a rushing touchdown of his own shortly after. - MF

» The Panthers defense/special teams unit is off to a good start after two weeks in a row with negative fantasy point totals. Already in the first quarter, Carolina has an interception and a punt returned for a touchdown. There's a lot of football left to play though, and the Bears have one of the most explosive offenses in the league. - Matt Franciscovich

» So...Eagles special teams? How ya doing? Last week, Philadelphia blocked a punt and recovered it for a touchdown. This week, Philadelphia blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. We can get used to that. - MG

» No real surprises in the Week 5 inactives. However, there are some things worth noting. Calvin Johnson is active and will be used as something other than a decoy (we hope). Meanwhile with Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams both inactive, Darrin Reaves gets the start for the Panthers at running back. He could be a sneaky play against the Bears run defense. - Marcas Grant
