Weslye Saunders suspended for violating NFL policy

Indianapolis Colts tight end Weslye Saunders has been suspended for the first eight games of the 2013 season for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances, the league announced Thursday.

Saunders, who was kicked off his college team at South Carolina, started his NFL career last season as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Colts picked him up off waivers when the Steelers cut him in October.

Saunders will be eligible to return to the Colts' active roster on Monday, Nov. 4, following the team's Nov. 3 game against the Houston Texans.

Saunders was a decent bet to make the Colts as their third tight end. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport notes the Colts worked out veteran tight ends Dante Rosario, Randy McMichael and Cornelius Ingram in May.

This suspension could help this year's "Mr. Irrelevant," Justice Cunningham, make the Colts' roster.
