Cam Ward ready, raring to 'hopefully hear my name called first' by Titans

Mike Borgonzi announced Tuesday what most of the NFL already figured.

The Tennessee Titans are staying put at No. 1.

The first-year general manager added that everyone would need to tune in Thursday to find out just who the pick would be. Again, though, it's an announcement most believe is already known.

The Titans are expected to take Miami quarterback Cam Ward at No. 1 overall to kick off the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and the Hurricanes standout is ready for the moment to come.

"I got a chance to learn more about (the Titans) personally over the last couple of months, and I am excited to hopefully hear my name called first, to go to a good organization like that," Ward said Wednesday during an NFL PLAY 60 event outside of Lambeau Field, via the Titans team website’s Jim Wyatt. "They have a great owner, a great GM, great assistant GM, great president. The team there, they have a pretty elite team, in my opinion -- they don't get enough credit on paper for what they really are. So, if I am there, I know it will turn out good."

Tennessee sent a huge contingent to Ward's Miami pro day, so he was already familiar with Borgonzi, head coach Brian Callahan and plenty others. On Wednesday, he got to see many of them again, met Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk and even got a hug from Commissioner Roger Goodell. It would seem the latter is a foreshadowing of what's to come if/when Ward's named is called by Goodell on Thursday evening.

Everything's pointing to Ward going No. 1 to the Titans.

One potential hiccup after Thursday might be Ward wearing No. 1, as he did with the Canes.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Moon, who starred for the Houston Oilers across 10 seasons, also wore No. 1 and his number is retired by the franchise, which moved to Tennessee ahead of the 1997 season. Ward got to meet Moon this week, as well.

The nine-time Pro Bowler didn't shut the door on giving his permission to unretire his number if it came to that.

"I'm thinking about it," Moon said, via Paul Kuharsky.com.

Of course, first Ward must have his name called first overall on Thursday night.

Should that go as most think it will, he's excited to hit Nashville in stride and about the prospects of playing for Callahan, who memorably coached another No. 1 overall pick, Joe Burrow, on the Cincinnati Bengals.

"Coach Callahan's offense, what he did with Joe Burrow his first year. … Getting a chance to meet with those guys, a lot of (the offense) translates to what I did at Miami this past year," Ward said. "I think if I ended up there it would be plug-and-play, just have to learn some new terminology, some new protections. But I think we'd be good."

Obviously, the Titans are hoping for great, and so too is Ward.

He cited a revamped offensive line as being a positive, along with the weapons around him, particularly No. 1 wide receiver Calvin Ridley.

Ward's clearly ready to take on Nashville as soon as he's taken in Green Bay.

"I think the quarterback there is going to be surrounded by some good weapons," he said, "and I just hope I'm that guy."
