Aaron Rodgers won't be able to renew an old rivalry after all.
Rodgers' left wrist injury will hold him out of the Pittsburgh Steelers' game Sunday against the Chicago Bears, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Sunday.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin confirmed the news to CBS Sports' Evan Washburn.
"I'll provide you with complete clarity: He's not going to play today," Tomlin said. "He fought his tail off all week, but that's the prudent play to make for us as a collective. So he won't be playing this week."
Veteran backup Mason Rudolph will start in Rodgers' place, while rookie Will Howard will serve as his backup. Rodgers is officially inactive.
Rodgers, who suffered a fractured wrist in the Steelers' Week 11 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, missed Wednesday's practice and was limited during the following two sessions.
Now, he'll miss a chance to play against the Bears for the first time in his career without being a member of the Green Bay Packers.
During his time with the Pack (from 2005-2022), Rodgers went 24-5 as a starter against Chicago (25-5 including a win in the 2010 NFC Championship Game). Rodgers has won eight straight against the Bears, with his last loss coming in Week 15, 2018 at Soldier Field.
Rodgers has 64,921 career passing yards -- 79 away from becoming only the fifth player in league chronicle to reach 65,000. He'll have to wait at least another week for the milestone.
Rodgers has completed 192 of 289 passes this year (66.4%) for 1,969 yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
The Steelers (6-4) kick off at the Chicago Bears (7-3) on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
