Geno Smith on Raiders' doubters: 'Let them sleep. I don't want them to see us coming'

The Las Vegas Raiders went through another slew of massive organizational modifications this offseason, changing the coaching staff, general manager and starting quarterback. The goal is a swift turnaround, returning to the postseason for the first time in four seasons, and winning a playoff game for the first time since 2002.

To jumpstart this turnaround, coach Pete Carroll and GM John Spytek have revamped the roster, bringing in veterans on defense, trading for quarterback Geno Smith, and drafting running back Ashton Jeanty as the motor of the offense.

The overhaul has changed the culture within the building, but the outside expectations remain low. The Raiders are still expected by most to finish fourth in a tough AFC West.

Joining NFL Network's Inside Training Camp Live on Monday, Smith said he's fine being doubted.

"I'm always the guy that I believe the game gets settled between the white lines on game day," Smith said. "But from my vantage point, we've got a really, really good team. I don't know if we'll shock anyone inside of this building, but maybe shock some outsiders. But it's good, like let them sleep. I don't want them to see us coming. We're just working in the shadows right now, getting our game right, and when it's time to go in those bright lights, I think we'll be ready."

Smith's play will key any turnaround in Vegas. The veteran has demonstrated the ability to make plays under pressure, but must mitigate the red zone turnovers that plagued him a year ago in Seattle.

There remain holes on the roster, including questions about a young receiver corps -- outside of Jakobi Meyers -- and in the secondary. Carroll and Co. imported a host of veterans to change the culture, but whether the Raiders can indeed turn things around in Year 1 will have a lot to do with how much production the coaching staff can coax out of the group of rookies and young players who could play key roles.
