Jaguars coach Liam Coen 'diving into' Trevor Lawrence's footwork to aid QB's mechanics

Jacksonville Jaguars' new coach, Liam Coen, aims to revamp Trevor Lawrence's lower-half mechanics ahead of the 2025 season.

"We're diving into his footwork," Coen recently told SiriusXM NFL Radio. "Everything with the quarterback position, so much is built on the lower half and the mind. And those are the things that we can truly control. Because the stroke is the stroke for us, that's how we look at it. The stroke is the stroke, and we're not touching that. So really, we're diving into his footwork, some of those mechanics."

Getting the lower half in line isn't a new process. While arm adjustments are more possible than Coen suggests, from Dak Prescott's famous pregame ritual to Josh Allen's early career revamp, getting the footwork and hips to marry the arm rotation can help every quarterback. It's likely something that Lawrence has already worked on, but the new coach's comments underscore the plan to rebuild the QB from the ground up.

Coen also plans to aid his quarterback through scheme -- giving him the answers to the test -- and an improved rushing attack.

"Obviously, once we get into the building some of the football aspects: the formations, the motions, the shifts," Coen said. "But for us to help him truly, also from a schematic standpoint, man, we've got to be able to run the football a little bit better. Give him some help from that standpoint, take a little pressure off, while also playing some good, sound, fundamental hard defense on the other side of the ball. To be able to ultimately get the best out of our quarterback, we gotta be able to help."

The Jags' interior offensive line struggled last season in pass protection and opening lanes for the rushing attack. To help solve the issues, Jacksonville signed center Robert Hainsey from Tampa Bay and Patrick Mekari from Baltimore. Getting more efficiency out of the rushing attack will help keep Lawrence out of bad third-and-long situations that have plagued the Jags offense. And, of course, better protection will help Lawrence's footwork.

One reason Coen was hired in Jacksonville was to help take Lawrence to the next level. That plan starts from the ground up and includes the entire offensive system.
