NFL roundup: Latest league news from Monday, Aug. 16

Philadelphia Eagles first-round pick DeVonta Smith is back at practice.

The rookie receiver was spotted on the practice field on Monday morning as the Eagles conduct a joint session with the New England Patriots. Smith suffered an MCL sprain earlier this month that was expected to knock him out two to three weeks.

Coach Nick Sirianni noted over the weekend the club wouldn't push the rookie to return for Thursday's preseason game versus the Pats.

"Right now, he's day to day," Sirianni said Saturday. "I don't want to put a timetable as far as if he'll be ready for Thursday. I don't know yet. So, he's working hard and working hard to get back, and our trainers and our strength staff is doing a great job of bringing him back. So, he's day to day, and look forward to seeing him out there in practice soon."

Soon was Monday.

It's unclear at this stage how much work Smith will do during joint practices, and the Eagles likely won't push him to play Thursday night if he's not 100 percent. But getting the WR back in the flow after two weeks on the shelf is a good sign he'll be ready for the season opener.

Injuries/COVID-19

• Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is expected to practice on a limited basis Monday, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported.
• Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur said quarterback Jordan Love (shoulder), who received a clean MRI, will not practice Monday and the team will work out quarterbacks on Tuesday. Running back Aaron Jones (hamstring) returned to practice Monday after being sidelined last week. Defensive end Za’Darius Smith (back) has been removed from the non-football injury list and is also practicing.
• Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich said quarterback Carson Wentz will soon begin doing walk-throughs. Reich declined to specify where Wentz will fall in the 5-12 week timetable given for his recovery. "I can just tell you we feel good about where we're at right now," Reich told reporters.
• Cincinnati Bengals coach Zac Taylor said quarterback Joe Burrow will not play this weekend.
• New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams has been activated from the physically unable to perform list and is practicing Monday.
• Dolphins receiver Allen Hurns suffered a wrist injury that will require surgery, NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe reported. The procedure is expected to keep Hurns out for about 3 months, per a source familiar with the situation.
• New York Giants quarterback Clayton Thorson suffered a concussion in Saturday's preseason opener and will miss time, per Pelissero.
• Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh told reporters that quarterback Trace McSorley (back) will be out a few weeks. The team placed cornerbacks Iman Marshall and Khalil Dorsey on injured reserve.
• The Arizona Cardinals activated running back James Conner, tight end Darrell Daniels, defensive lineman Leki Fotu and safety Charles Washington from the reserve/COVID-19 list.
• New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones was seen at practice wearing a brace on his left knee. He said there is no injury, though, it's just a protective measure, per NFL Network's Mike Giardi.
• Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell told reporters that D'Andre Swift (groin) is expected to return to practice Tuesday. Rookie defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike (back) will be limited at Monday's practice.
• The Cleveland Browns placed tight end Stephen Carlson (knee) and wide receiver Ryan Switzer (foot) on injured reserve.
• The Detroit Lions placed center Evan Boehm on injured reserve.
• San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said he expects defensive end Nick Bosa (knee) to be a full participant in practice next week. Rookie wide receiver Austin Watkins will be placed on injured reserve after fracturing his foot.
• The Las Vegas Raiders activated kicker Daniel Carlson from the reserve/COVID-19 list, waived quarterback Case Cookus, K Dominik Eberle, long snapper Liam McCullough, running back Bo Scarbrough and receiver Caleb Scott; and released cornerback DeVante Bausby and defensive tackle Ethan Westbrooks.

Trades

• The Houston Texans are trading cornerback Keion Crossen to the New York Giants in exchange for a 2023 sixth-round pick, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported. The fourth-year corner was a special teams ace under Joe Judge in New England. Crossen made the first four starts of his career in 2020 and collected 46 tackles over 16 games. The Giants later announced the trade.

• The Giants are signing Brian Lewerke, per his agency.
• The 49ers announced their signing of former Eagles linebacker Mychal Kendricks is official.
• The Seattle Seahawks signed defensive end Alex Tchangam
• The Arizona Cardinals signed linebacker Bryson Young.
• The Los Angeles Chargers signed long snapper Matt Overton.
• The Minnesota Vikings waived kicker Riley Patterson and wide receiver Blake Proehl with injury designations.
• The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms with veteran linebacker Nick Dzubnar, and safeties Bradley McDougald and Clayton Geathers.
• The Miami Dolphins signed wide receiver Khalil McClain.
