NFL roundup: Latest league news from Wednesday, Sept. 1

The Dallas Cowboys have made another change to their quarterback room.

One day after parting ways with Ben DiNucci and Garrett Gilbert, the Cowboys claimed Will Grier. The former Panthers backup was beaten out by P.J. Walker in August, just two years after Carolina made him a third-round selection in the 2019 draft.

Now he'll compete with Cooper Rush to be Dallas' QB2 behind Dak Prescott. Grier has completed 28 of 52 passes (53.8%) for 228 yards with four interceptions in two career starts. Those are also his only two appearances, and they were both losses.

  • The Carolina Panthers claimed guard Michael Jordan off waivers from the Bengals.
  • The Chicago Bears claimed wide receiver Nsimba Webster off waivers from the 49ers.
  • The Cincinnati Bengals claimed defensive back Nick McCloud off waivers from the Bills and defensive end Wyatt Ray from the Titans.
  • The Denver Broncos claimed defensive back Mike Ford off waivers from the Lions and running back Nate McCrary from the Ravens.
  • The Detroit Lions claimed wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge off waivers from the Browns and kicker Austin Seibert from the Bengals.

Injuries/COVID-19

  • Baltimore Ravens rookie wide receiver Rashod Bateman (groin) was placed on injured reserve and will be eligible to return on Week 4, the team announced Wednesday. The first-rounder underwent surgery last month after suffering the injury in practice in early August. Fellow WR Miles Boykin (hamstring) was also placed on IR and is due for a Week 4 return.
  • The Atlanta Falcons are placing starting left guard Josh Andrews on injured reserve after he broke his hand in practice Tuesday, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported. Andrews will have minor surgery and is not expected to be out long term. His placement on IR requires that he is sidelined a minimum of three weeks.
  • Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll told reporters Wednesday that multi-time Pro Bowl linebacker Bobby Wagner is not practicing this week due to a procedure on his knee, but will return next week. Carroll said it's a procedure Wagner has undergone each of the last five years.
  • The New England Patriots are placing wide receiver N'Keal Harry (shoulder) on IR, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported. He's expected to return in a few weeks.
  • San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch told reporters that Monday is the "optimistic" return date for rookie quarterback Trey Lance, who injured his finger in the team's preseason finale this past weekend.
  • Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu tested positive for COVID-19 and is going on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Pelissero reported via the transaction wire.
  • Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard told reporters that wide receiver T.Y. Hilton underwent neck surgery but noted it "was not a major procedure." Ballard added that Hilton will be placed on IR but isn't expected to miss significant time.
  • Baltimore Ravens tight end Nick Boyle was seen on the practice field for the first time since suffering a season-ending knee injury last year. Wide receivers Marquise Brown (hamstring) and Sammy Watkins also participated in practice.
  • New York Giants wide receiver John Ross (hamstring) and linebacker Elerson Smith (hamstring) will start the season on IR, the team announced.
  • The Carolina Panthers placed guard Cole Banwart on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Roster cuts

  • The Denver Broncos are cutting running back Royce Freeman, per Rapoport. The 2018 third-rounder averaged 4.9 yards per carry last season but received just 35 attempts. The Broncos also waived defensive lineman Jonathan Harris, per Pelissero.
  • The New Orleans Saints released kicker Aldrick Rosas, Pelissero reported per the wire. The former Pro Bowler is expected to return to the team later in the week, Pelissero added. The Saints also reached injury settlements with defensive back Bryce Thompson and defensive end Marcus Willoughby.
  • The New York Jets released cornerback Blessuan Austin and defensive end Jabari Zuniga.
  • The Seattle Seahawks are releasing quarterback Sean Mannion and cutting guard Phil Haynes, per Pelissero.
  • The Carolina Panthers released wide receiver David Moore.
  • The Detroit Lions released tight end Darren Fells and safety Dean Marlowe.

Roster signings

The team has since announced the signings along with 14 other practice squad players, including running back Peyton Barber.
  • The Dallas Cowboys have signed running back Corey Clement to their active roster, Garafolo reports, per a source. Clement, who played for the Eagles the last four seasons, was recently cut by the Giants.
  • The Detroit Lions are signing former Washington QB Steven Montez to their practice squad, per Garafolo. The Lions also signed kicker Zane Gonzalez and cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman to their practice squad.
  • The Seattle Seahawks are signing ex-Jaguars quarterback Jake Luton to its 53-man roster, Pelissero reports. The Seahawks signed 2016 first-round defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche to their practice squad.
  • The San Francisco 49ers re-signed tight end Jordan Matthews, wide receivers Travis Benjamin and River Cracraft and quarterback Nate Sudfeld to the practice squad.
  • The Green Bay Packers re-signed quarterback Kurt Benkert to their practice squad, per Pelissero. Green Bay has since announced the Benkert signing along with 15 other practice squad players including wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown and defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson.
  • The New England Patriots have re-signed defensive tackle Bill Murray to their practice squad, per Pelissero. The Pats are also signing former Ravens fullback Ben Mason, per Rapoport. The Patriots have since announced the signing of 12 players to their practice squad, including quarterback Brian Hoyer, rookie wideout Tre Nixon, and kicker Nick Folk.
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers are re-signing running back Jaylen Samuels to their practice squad, per Pelissero. The Steelers are also signing wide receiver Rico Bussey, Pelissero reported per Bussey's agent. The Steelers have since confirmed those signings after announcing 15 players added tp thier practice squad, including running back Trey Edmunds and ex-Raiders safety Karl Joseph.
  • The Miami Dolphins are signing quarterback Reid Sinnett to their practice squad, NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe reported. Miami is also signing Shaquem Griffin to the practice squad, according to Pelissero.
  • The Cincinnati Bengals are signing wide receiver Trent Taylor to their practice squad, per Garafolo. The team has since announced the signing of Taylor along with 14 other practice squad players, including tight end Thaddeus Moss.
  • The Philadelphia Eagles re-signed offensive tackle Le'Raven Clark, wide receiver Travis Fulgham and running back Jordan Howard to their practice squad.
  • The Denver Broncos re-signed quarterback Brett Rypien and wide receiver Kendall Hinton to their practice squad. The Broncos also signed defensive lineman Shamar Stephen and offensive tackle Cam Fleming to their 53-man roster.

  • The Las Vegas Raiders are signing former Giants cornerback Madre Harper to their practice squad. The Raiders also intend to bring back defensive lineman Niles Scott to their practice squad, per Rapoport. Las Vegas has since announced the signing of 15 players to their practice squad.

Minnesota also added 14 players to their practice squad, including running back Ameer Abdullah and guard Dakota Dozier.
  • The Tennessee Titans signed 12 players to their practice squad, including receiver Dez Fitzpatrick and defensive back Briean Boddy-Calhoun. They're also re-signing quarterback Matt Barkley to their practice squad. Barkley was released Wednesday from the 53-man roster.
  • The Indianapolis Colts signed 15 players to their practice squad, including quarterback Brett Hundley.
